where the Sky comes down
all the way to touch the Earth
there Earth reaches up

the red of her soil transforms
in the air beneath the Sky

new colors emerge
the pigmentation of life
in the space between

Earth and Sky where life itself
is the fruit of that union

Hello, World

there is a way of looking
that is a way of feeling
a synaesthetic perception
whereby self and other blur
and the aliveness of the world
is found to be undeniable
as it presents itself
in relationship
with those
who choose to
allow themselves
to experience it – and
sometimes even to those
who refuse to make that choice

Liminal Perception

droplets condensing
emerging from a liquid plane
a vertical plane, a pane of liquid
already straining credulity
and yet there is truth
in the image
even in the words
what on earth do I mean?
I am showing you what I see
I am mixing metaphors
with actual facts
I am seeking to facilitate
a shift in perception

this is poetry, after all
I am following a thread
it is a golden thread

from the actual liquid
of a pane of glass
arises the appearance
of condensation
albeit on a scale that is
altogether inappropriate
and yet there it is – seeing
is believing, right?

I see droplets emerging
from a vertical pane of liquid
I see inherent ambiguity
and I magnify it
shine a light
on it

what is the point
in this kind of play?
what value ambiguity?
I restore the necessary blur
to allow for the clearest Vision
I apply stochastic resonance
increasing the noise
in order to hear
the signal

Finding the Gifts in Grief

© Matthew Word Bain

a lone light shining
on a relic of another era
a poignant picture
of a night filled
with premonitions
as yet unrecognizable
portents of loss and grief

simultaneously seeds
of new connection

on this night
I flip the coin of grief
to its other side of praise
and bask in the memories
of grace and laughter,
beauty and love
magnified somehow
through their very loss

Entrance to Entrainment

where the track of the trance inducing rhythm
of the clickety-clack
and the trail of the trance inducing hum
of rubber on asphalt
coincide
there is a crossing over
this is a place of high energy
a place of great potential
and thus a place of great danger
as are all places where crossing over
becomes possible
but the greater danger
is in the effects of the trances
induced by either one
like any tool
if one is unable to achieve
the ends the tool makes possible
without using the tool
then the tool
has more power over
the one who uses it than that one
has over the tool
consider the value of a phone
to someone with poor communication skills
or the value of a chainsaw
to someone unable to fell a tree
with an axe
often the effects are only visible
further downstream
but they are no less real
for being delayed
in this case
we must consider
the effect of trance induction
by these various tools
on those who lack the ability
to find their own way into trance
or the knowledge of why they might
be possessed of a need to do so
